Civil Rights

Civil Rights Law encompasses a broad area of law, which includes and prohibits hate crimes committed against individuals or groups based on their race, ethnic background, or religion, and hate crimes against homosexuals and health care providers. Under civil rights laws, all American citizens are entitled to the right to vote, to receive an education, and equal employment and housing opportunities. Civil rights laws establish the right for those in public institutions such as prisons, government-run nursing homes, and mental institutions to have safe and sanitary living conditions. They further insure the first amendment rights to speech and assembly, and to practice one's religion, and from government mandated religion.

he American Disabilities Act is a specific civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities in terms of employment, in government programs and in public places, such as hotels, restaurants, stores, theaters and health care facilities. While these are a few civil rights examples and prohibitions, there are numerous other areas also covered by civil rights laws.
